Buying online has risks. Surprisingly, a site that you thought was safe may appear in the news because it had a problem with its security. Was your credit card number among those who stole? If you are lucky, the company will be honest and send you a letter. If not, all you can do is sit and wait. However, this does not have to happen. You can use your Paypal account to generate a card number for each site where you make purchases. Best of all, you can do it through the PayPal site, which means you don’t need to download any software.
Visit the “Profile” section of your PayPal account. There you will find a link to the PayPal plug-in. This plug-in is what allows you to generate a virtual card number for different sites. If you don’t have a PayPal account yet, sign up for one.
Go to the plug-in section of the PayPal site. In it, you will see a menu that lists the different actions you can perform through the site. These actions are not as detailed as in the PayPal plug-in software, but you can still generate a card number with the online version.
Click on the “Secure Cards” link. You will see a box that lists the cards that have been generated and two buttons that say “Close card” and “Generate new card”. You will also see a display menu that shows active and closed cards.
Select the “Generate new card” button. With this action, the process will begin.
Choose the type of card. If you are shopping on a site for the first time, it is recommended that you generate a one-time card. This ensures that the card number cannot be reused again if the information was stolen. On the other hand, a multi-purpose card would be perfect for the sites where you shop frequently. Once you select the card type, PayPal will generate the card number along with the expiration date and security code.
You can use PayPal to generate a card number for any site that accepts credit cards. A card number generated with PayPal keeps the real numbers of credit cards safe. Multi-purpose cards can be closed at any time.
Never use multipurpose cards with companies that you don’t know well. Remember to close cards that you no longer use.
